Hot on the heels of the Nissan Tsuru’s demise, comes this eye opening (but not really) video comparison

Damn, the Tsuru just fell apart. It’s amazing how far engineers have been able to go as far as crash protection in such a relatively short amount of time.
I always get a little nervous when I see baby seats in old ass cars around here.

That’s why you need an SE-R trim. Avoid all the accidents.

I’m still pretty sure 50 years of metal fatigue and rust had a lot to do with how MUCH the Impala crumpled.

On the IIHS YouTube page: “...the least expensive sedan sold by Nissan in the Mexico ...”
Didn’t know the British colonisers reached that far.
The results are horrid but not surprising. Offset impacts were not really an engineering consideration until the late 90s.
Decapitation from the skyward steering wheel, then a dashboard to your face.

What’s F’ed up is that this strategy just got updated in Mexico with Nissan. Out with the Tsuru and in with the Nissan Tiida aka the old ass Nissan Versa. It is sold next to the new Versa ironically enough. A lot of taxis are Nissan Tiidas

Old ‘Murican cars were heavy AND weak, just look at the 4000 lb. Impala above.

Damage looks to be about the same as period photos of them getting wrecked.

But you would still be impaled by the steering column. Collapsible ones weren’t mandated until the late 60's.

At least the Tiida is much, much safer than the coffin named Tsuru:
It is common to leave an old and popular model selling for many years in latin america, the Tsuru takes it to the extreme but the idea is that you can get the “old” one with cheaper components and proven reliability for taxi use and the new one for personal use. Here in Chile the V16(AKA Tsuru) is still really popular as cabs and I always hate getting into them not only because they are unsafe but they are tiny inside and most of them have annoying rattles because they are so cheaply built.

very true
Still, standards should be enforced, despite cost.

This is so true, I hate when people in the FP defend these cars saying that it’s all people in third world countries can afford, everyone need safer cars and if you can’t afford a new one you can always get an used one. Airbags, ABS and ESP should be mandatory in every country as well as crash testing for each new car.
But manufacturers like to sell cars and they won’t listen to consumers so they keep selling things like the Tsuru because they don’t care about who is in the car, they only care about money.

Money indeed. The same they use to pay off the easily corruptible in Latin countries
